DR. TONYA MESTEMAKER PSY.D.
Dr. Tonya Mestemaker, a licensed clinical psychologist has worked extensively with individuals who have experienced trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, mood instability, addictions, and life crises and transition issues. Dr. Mestemaker works with children age eight and above, adolescents, young adults, adults, and families. From the first session, she actively engages and collaborates with clients to develop an individualized treatment plan based on each person’s wants and needs. She frequently finds that a cognitive behavioral approach to treatment known as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy or DBT is extremely effective in changing maladaptive thoughts about self, others, and the environment. Modifying these thoughts leads to changes in feelings and behaviors as well as learning to accept oneself in the moment while still acknowledging the need to continue to make positive changes.
Dr. Mestemaker also specializes in the area of treating trauma and she finds DBT as well as Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing or EMDR to be effective treatments. People can experience trauma symptoms from a variety of situations. Traditionally, trauma is thought to be the result of emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, and neglect that can occur in childhood. However, individuals can experience the symptoms of trauma for example from a hostile work environment, medical procedures, illnesses, bullying, and witnessing accidents. Individuals who have been traumatized may organize their lives around ways to relieve and ward off traumatic memories and reminders. Additionally, when faced with a reminder of the traumatic event, an individual may react with intense fear, worry, and anxiety. EMDR provides a way to address traumatic memories and change thoughts about the traumatic event, which in turn decreases intense emotional responses. This change leads to more adaptive ways of coping and a healthier, more productive lifestyle.
Dr. Mestemaker’'s own life journey has led to her more recent therapeutic work in the area of family building options through adoption and fertility treatment. She draws on her own personal experience and over 14 years of clinical practice to provide stress management techniques and to support individuals and couples on their journey to parenthood.

A BIT ABOUT THERAPY
I implement effective psychotherapy methods to instill self-understanding among patients and encourage them to adopt new attitudes and feelings towards life situations. It is essential to keep in mind that therapy is not a magic pill or a quick fix: therapy is a healing process that necessitates participation and investment from the patient and caretaker alike. But in the end, making small changes in self-defeating behavior and in feelings of sadness, fear, and pain can bring life-altering results - and with my services, I will help you achieve just that. My services are personalized to suit everyone’s needs, and I go the extra mile to provide you with all the tools you need to recover.
